How Pets Fly:
Understanding Airline Pet Travel Options
Airline pet travel policies are… let’s just call them “a labyrinth designed by someone who hates convenience.”
Here’s the breakdown of the actual ways pets can fly, without sugarcoating and without freaking anyone out. Here's a clear breakdown so owners understand what may be available depending on size, breed, route and airline policy.
Types of Pet Travel

In-Cabin (AKA: The Dream Scenario)
Some pets are small enough to slide under the seat in a soft carrier and pretend they’re carry-on luggage with feelings.
Basic rules:
-
They must fit under the seat
-
They must stay in the carrier
-
They cannot scream the entire flight — emotionally, yes; out loud, no
This is what I do most: flying your tiny royalty from Point A to Point B in the actual cabin.

Checked Baggage (AVIH — “Animal in Hold”)
This sounds dramatic, but it’s literally the airline’s version of saying:
“Your pet is too big to be under the seat, but they can still fly on your ticket.”
Here’s what this option usually means:
-
You check in your pet at the counter like a suitcase that breathes
-
They fly in a pressurized, temperature-controlled compartment (not the wild west)
-
They go on your flight
-
You pay the airline directly
This option varies by airline, route, season, and the mood of whoever wrote the pet policy.

Manifest Cargo (AKA: The Official, Bureaucratic Route)
This is for pets who can’t fly in cabin or as checked baggage.
Translation:
-
You book through the airline’s cargo division
-
There’s paperwork
-
More paperwork
-
And then some paperwork
But again — they fly in a pressurized, temperature-controlled hold designed for live animals.
Not over the wing. Not next to suitcases full of knives. Not in Narnia.
Just… the animal section.
A Quick Note About My Role
My role is help you understand which airline-permitted travel options may be available for your pet based on their size, breed and itinerary. Final decisions about travel categories, approvals, and policies are made by the airline.
Have Questions?
If you're unsure which option your pet may qualify for, feel free to reach out or submit a quote request.
I'm happy to walk through what the airline allows and what your next steps may look like.
